Soybean
Oil as per IP, BP, EP, and USP Grades (Indian, British, European, and United States
Pharmacopoeia):
Soybean, scientifically known as Glycine max, belongs to the Fabaceae
family and is an erect, branching plant growing 0.2 to 2.0 metres tall.
Commonly referred to as the soja bean, it has been used for centuries in China
as both food and medicine. The seeds, measuring 5 to 11 mm in diameter, grow in
pods containing 4–5 seeds clustered together. Rich in protein, it is widely
cultivated across Asia.
Soybean
Oil Overview:
This remarkable oil has a clean, neutral taste with a nearly imperceptible
aroma, making it ideal for enhancing the natural flavours of prepared foods. It
is considered heart-friendly and is widely recommended for diabetic and cardiac
patients due to its ability to reduce LDL and total cholesterol levels.
Soybean
Oil History:
The term "soy oil" gained prominence in 1918 by Jordon, and it was
Piper and Mosse who introduced it globally in 1923. It wasn’t until the 1940s
that it became commonly used worldwide.
Extraction
Process (How We Make It):
Soybean oil is obtained from the seeds of Glycine max using cold
pressing or solvent extraction. In the solvent extraction process, the seeds
are cracked and flaked, and the hulls are removed via screening and aspiration.
The flakes are then solvent-extracted using hexane to obtain crude soybean oil.
This oil undergoes refining, degumming, neutralisation, and bleaching to remove
phosphatides, fatty acids, resins, metals, triglycerides, and waxes.
