Tea tree oil has a wide range of industrial uses thanks to
its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It’s a popular
choice for skincare, especially for treating acne, as it helps reduce redness
and soothes irritation. It also supports the healing of acne scars, leaving the
skin looking clearer and smoother.
Tea Tree
Oil – BP, IP, USP Grade (British, Indian & United States Pharmacopoeia)
Tea Tree Oil is obtained through the steam distillation of
the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant from the Myrtaceae family.
Known for its refreshing, camphor-like aroma, the oil ranges in appearance from
nearly clear to pale yellow. The leaves, from which the oil is extracted, grow
on evergreen trees native to Australia, reaching heights of 2 to 30 meters.
These trees bear small capsule fruits and white to pink flowers.
Traditionally used in low concentrations as a topical
remedy, Tea Tree Oil has been recognized for its effectiveness in treating
various skin conditions such as acne, dandruff, insect bites, fungal
infections, and more.
History
and Origin
The botanical name Melaleuca alternifolia comes from
the Myrtaceae family and is also commonly referred to as a paperbark tree. The
name “tea tree” was coined by Captain James Cook in 1770 after he used its
leaves to brew tea during his voyage along the eastern coast of Australia.
The oil's commercial journey began in the 1920s when
Australian chemist Arthur Penfold highlighted its antiseptic properties. Dr.
Penfold and others paved the way for tea tree oil’s global use in medicine and
personal care. Over the years, its production has expanded to other Melaleuca
species and regions such as Egypt, Malaysia, Tunisia, and Vietnam.
